Freundlieb

Set in Kitano-cho’s former Kobe Union Church, Freundlieb offers vaulted ceilings and lots of light. It’s great as a coffee stop but also serves an excellent breakfast.

This is one of our favourite cafes in Kobe, set in the former Kobe Union Church. As a cafe, Freundlieb dates back to 1924, but was moved to this particular W.M. Vories-designed Gothic-style building in 1997. And what an elegant space it is — a bright, airy space, with high vaulted ceilings and lots of natural light streaming in through tall windows. Today, it’s a bakery, shop, and cafe serving up cakes, sandwiches, salads, fresh pastries, coffee, and tea. We particularly love the egg sandwiches made with freshly-baked bread and that creamy mayo-egg filling that Japan does so well. It’s a great choice for breakfast when you’re in the Kitano-cho area.
