Shibuya Parco

Newly reopened in November 2019 after three years of renovation, Shibuya Parco is back and ready to dazzle. From drag queen-run cocktail bars to high fashion shopping to Tokyo’s first Nintendo merchandise store, visitors will find much to love and delight in here.

Does Shibuya really need a new department store? Only if it’s as hip as the newly reopened Shibuya Parco. Don’t be fooled by all the big luxury designers taking up the ground floor real estate - you’ve got to head inside to experience everything the reimagined Parco has to offer.

For starters, eating and drinking here is way more interesting than your average department store. Chaos Kitchen in the basement is a far cry from the gleaming depachika of Takashimaya or Isetan. Rather, it’s inspired by gritty yokocho alleyways lined with drinking bars, with a good number of offbeat places nestled between the more conventional restaurants. Sip cocktails with fabulously-dressed drag queens at Campy! Bar, or crunch on a cicada parfait at the Kome to Circus izakaya, where the M.O. is all about unusual ingredients like crows, crocodiles, and other critters we’ll leave to the imagination.

Anime, manga, and game aficionados will adore the 6th floor. Dubbed ‘Shibuya Cyberspace,’ this floor is home to Shibuya’s first Pokemon Centre, Japan’s first official Nintendo store, a Shonen Jump manga store, and an eSports cafe. This is the perfect place to stock up on all the merchandise your heart desires. Whether or not you want to shell out a few thousand dollars for a Swarovski crystal-studded Pokemon-themed bag is another question altogether.

We particularly love the rooftop space at Shibuya Parco. Not only are there sensational views of the Shibuya surroundings from the 10th floor, the folks behind the Aoyama Farmers Market have opened Commune Parco. Named for the trendy outdoor food park of the same name, the space features permanent food and drink vendors and hosts the occasional event. Go on Tuesdays for tasty deals on tacos and wash it down with a tequila shot or spiked coffee cocktail.

Besides all of this, Shibuya Parco also has several floors of clothes shopping, the Parco Art Museum, a cinema, and a theatre. Harajuku’s iconic Condomania novelty shop also relocated to Shibuya Parco - welcome news for those of you who missed that shop.
