Another northern temple far from the beaten track, Shisen-do Temple is the perfect choice for visitors who want to escape the crowds that plague better known spots.

The name Shisen-do means “hermit’s retreat” and this is an apt name for this quiet little temple hidden up in a residential neighborhood not far from equally pleasing Manshu-in Temple. It’s got a fine karesansui (dry gravel “Zen”) garden which is lined with azaleas that burst into colorful bloom in the spring.
