Kyoto Museum Traditional Crafts Fureaikan Northern Higashiyama

The Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design (formerly Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts or Fureaikan) is a small free museum that showcases the main traditional crafts of Kyoto. It’s a great rainy day activity.

The Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design is a great place to learn about Kyoto’s incredible traditional crafts. All the main industries are featured here: lacquerware, textiles, woodworking, metalwork, basketry etc. It’s very close to the other major sights of the Okazaki Museum District, such as the Heian-jingu shrine, so it’s easy to drop by here and have a quick look.

It’s located in the Miyako Messe building, which is just northwest of the National Museum of Modern Art. It’s a large grey building. Go in and take the escalator to the basement and then look for the sign on your right.
