Milan Nataraj

For delicious Indian food that’s vegan and budget-friendly, head over to Milan Nataraj, located a short walk from Shibuya crossing. Where else are you going to find vegan naan in this city? There are vegan, vegetarian, and garlic/onion-free options on the menu — something for everyone here!

Ask a local vegetarian or vegan, and they’ll tell you — Nataraj is the place to head to for budget-friendly Indian food that’s 100% vegetarian and 200% tasty. What’s more, it’s centrally located, just north of the Shibuya crossing. This cozy little restaurant with small chandeliers on the ceiling is perfect for a midday pit stop between sightseeing in this area!

Unsurprisingly, their menus are English-friendly, and everything is clearly labelled as to whether it’s vegan or vegetarian, and whether or not it contains dairy, garlic, or onions. Eggs aren’t used at Nataraj, though you will find some soy meat substitutes. Apparently, the vegetables used in their curries are all organically grown on the farms supplying directly to Nataraj — another reason to feel better about eating there.

The options at Nataraj aren’t as extensive as, say, a regular Indian restaurant serving meat and fish dishes alongside. But, they will be enough for most eaters. There We like the vegan Palak Nataraj, which is their take on a spinach curry and cottage cheese. Here, the cheese is replaced with soy meat. The vegan naan is objectively brilliant; dare we say that we’d choose this each time over the regular naan? Try the filled vegan naan — we like the garlic ones, as well as the nut and raisin bread.

You could go for dinner and order eight-course dinners for around JPY2180 per person. But the Nataraj lunch buffet is probably what will give you the most bang for your buck. This all-you-can-eat spread clocks in at under JPY1500 per person for 90 minutes. You’ll get several vegan curries and side dishes (we love the cauliflower and onion pakora), a vegetarian one, vegan naan, and salad with vega-friendly dressing. It’s fantastic value for money. The buffet runs till 3pm, so you could even squeeze in a relatively late lunch.
