Maltan
- Tokyo
- 15 Jun, 2025
Located near the south exit of Kanda Station, Maltan is a funky little basement bar serving Japanese craft beers and single-malt whiskies. It can be a little smoky, but the cozy atmosphere and eccentric owner make it a great little place to visit.

To visit Maltan, you’ll need to find it first. It’s not the easiest place to find if you don’t know what you’re looking for, so you’ll need to look for a sign with a whisky glass above a building entrance. Once you head downstairs, you’ll find yourself in a funky little dive bar.

Maltan has been operating for more than a decade now, and it’s still going strong. While it doesn’t have the widest range of craft beers - there are just eight taps here - it’s still going strong after all this time. We suspect that the quaint, cozy atmosphere, and friendly if eccentric owner plays a big part in this.

There are also bottled beers, and you can choose from some great domestic ones like Swan Lake, Sankt Gallen, and Minoh. They’re not particularly cheap here, though, and you’d be better off picking them up from Nomono in Akihabara one train stop away.
Smoking establishments are common in Japan, and unfortunately Maltan does belong to that category. There aren’t always smokers around so it’s really luck of the draw as to whether you’ll end up visiting when there are many of them around.
