Porta Kyoto

Porta is a shopping and dining complex spread around the Kyoto Station building. It’s one of the best places to eat in the Kyoto Station area, with an amazing variety of Japanese and international cuisine.

Porta is divided into four zones: the East Area and West Area, which are on the B1 floor of the station building, the South Area, which is on the B2 floor, and Porta Sky Dining, which is on the 11th floor. Most of the restaurants are in the East, West and Sky Dining sections.

To get to the underground zones from the train platforms and main concourse, simply walk out of the north (Karasuma) side of the station and take the escalators down (or from the subway platforms, follow the signs for Porta). To get to the Sky Dining zone, take the long series of escalators from the main concourse to the 11th floor.

You’ll find most types of Japanese cuisine represented, as well as several coffee shops, a few fast food outlets, and a Starbucks and Subway. You can also buy good take-away bentos (Japanese lunch boxes) and sushi to eat on the train. Note that that many restaurants here can be packed at lunchtime and all day on holidays. The restaurants in the underground zone are cheap and casual, while those on the 11th floor tend to be more proper and can be pricier (but they’re all fine with walks and perfectly comfortable with foreign guests).

In addition to restaurants, you’ll find a wide variety of shops in the South Area, which is on the B2 floor of the station. It’s most easily accessed via the escalators in the middle of the main concourse of the station on the Karasuma side. You can also easily access it from the subway station.
