Hyotei Restaurant Northern Higashiyama

One of Kyoto’s Michelin three-star restaurants, Hyotei is one of the most attractive restaurants in Kyoto. It’s a kaiseki restaurant that makes few concessions to foreign palates.

Located in an incredibly picturesque traditional Japanese building just down the hill from the Kyoto International Community House, Hyotei is one of Kyoto’s most respected temples of kaiseki fare. Meals tend to be heavy on fish and vegetables and diners are occasionally underwhelmed by the fare, especially if they go expecting items more tailored to Western palates. But if you’re after traditional kaiseki served in truly refined surroundings, Hyotei is a good choice.
