Conveniently located inside the large Aqua City shopping complex, Sony ExploraScience in Odaiba is a good option for families with young kids to entertain.

Sony ExploraScience is one of Odaiba’s several science museums. This one, however, has exhibits focusing primarily on light, sound, and entertainment - as befits a company like Sony - to showcase the connections between science principles and new technologies like games, music, and film.

The exhibits here are bilingual, with explanations in both English and Japanese. It is popular with school groups, both local and international, and you might occasionally run into large groups of children here.

One of the signature exhibits at ExploraScience is the sinister-sounding ‘smile ranking,’ which is really quite benign. A device captures a photo of you smiling, compares it to its massive database of smiles, and finally “grades” your smile.

The Sony ExploraScience is just one of several fantastic science museums to choose from in Odaiba. But, its location inside Aqua City - a large shopping complex next to Decks Odaiba - makes it one of the better choices for visiting families. Restaurants, shops, and a huge cinema downstairs make for a range of convenient post-museum entertainment options.
