Shinjuku Pit Inn

Tokyo is virtually unrivalled in Asia for its jazz scene, and Shinjuku Pit Inn is one of the best places in the metropolis to listen to ultra-talented up-and-coming musicians.

Having been in operation for over 50 years now, Shinjuku Pit Inn is a stalwart in the jazz scene in Tokyo, and for good reason. It’s always prioritized the music experience. Jazz musicians of all stripes have played at this space throughout the years, and they take center stage - literally. The space is laid out such that extraneous conversations are discouraged and the performers are at the centre of your attention. But it’s warm, unpretentious, and lively rather than intimidating. As a bonus, the staff at Shinjuku Pit Inn are also friendly and accommodating of tourists and non-Japanese speakers.

The cover charge at night is set at a reasonable JPY3000, and definitely a bargain for the quality of the space and musical experience. If you’re travelling on a tight budget, opt for a matinee instead - afternoon jazz gigs only cost JPY1300 per person. Jazz lovers should not miss this.
