Jiromaru

A Korean barbeque beef restaurant serving great wagyu without breaking the bank? That’s exactly what Jiromaru in Shinjuku is — a standing yakiniku bar that’s as cheap as chips. They sell different cuts of wagyu by the piece, so solo diners needn’t be left out of this beefy experience.

Who doesn’t love a good standing bar? It’s the quintessential Tokyo experience, after all — standing around rubbing shoulders with tired salarymen around tiny tables, quaffing flagons of beer and picking at flavourful little plates of food. You’ll see all kinds of standing restaurants, serving anything from ramen to sushi to izakaya-style dishes. But Jiromaru is a rare breed: a standing Korean barbeque bar.

Korean barbeque isn’t typically great for solo dining. At most restaurants of this type, you’ll order plates of a single cut of meat. Unless you’re with a group or at least one other person, you won’t be able to try a wide variety of cuts — which is the whole point of eating at a yakiniku restaurant.

Shinjuku’s Jiromaru sets itself apart by not only being a standing yakiniku bar — virtually unheard of — they also sell high-quality cuts by the slice, rather like pieces of sushi. This means you can try different cuts of wagyu without having to order an entire platter of each one at once. It’s especially great if you’ve always wanted to try that one strange cut of intestine that no one else has ever wanted to share with you!

Jiromaru is a fantastic little place to have on your Shinjuku dining list. We love that they serve A4-grade wagyu by the piece. We also love that it’s casual enough that you can drop by in the evening for a few slices of meat and a glass of beer, without the pressure to order a ton of food. As a bonus, everything on the menu is very reasonably priced — the cheapest item begins at just JPY30! What an affordable luxury.
