Momijiya

Momijiya in Iidabashi is well-loved for its delicious Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki pancakes, packed with plenty of vegetables, meat, and noodles. Whether it’s the best in Tokyo is debatable, but it’s always packed - which should tell you plenty.

Okonomiyaki, or ‘as you like it’ pancakes, are a surefire crowd-pleaser. They’re tasty, and filled with meat, seafood, vegetables, and eggs. While Kansai-style okonomiyaki restaurants are quite common - held together by a batter - restaurants Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki are harder to come by in Tokyo. Momijiya is one such restaurant that also just happens to be one of the best of its kind in Tokyo.

Located in Iidabashi, Momijiya is all about hearty Hiroshima-style pancakes cooked right in front of you on an iron grill at the counter - as it should be. In this style, the pancakes consist of a thin crepe layered with egg, fried noodles, heaps of cabbage, and protein toppings like seafood or pork slices. Then, of course, there are the finishing touches - swirls of Bulldog brown sauce, mayonnaise, and a shower of green seaweed.

Besides the pancakes, diners can also order stir-fried yakisoba or yakiudon noodles, and a variety of dishes cooked on the iron grill like sautéed squid eggs, ginger-fried eggplant, and scallops. There’s enough variety to keep everyone happy, and it’s a great little restaurant to eat at with friends.
