Andon Ryokan

Located a little further out of central Tokyo, Andon Ryokan is a modern designer ryokan that’s affordable for budget travellers. The rooms are nice if basic, but the otherwise stylish, quirky decor and gorgeously-tiled jacuzzi more than makes up for that!

Minowa isn’t the first place most tourists think of when looking for a place to stay. It’s further out of central Tokyo, highly residential, and there are very few tourist attractions there. But that’s precisely why Andon Ryokan will appeal to some guests - it’s a chance to explore a local Tokyo neighbourhood you’d never venture to otherwise.

Designed and operated by proprietor Toshiko Ishii, Andon Ryokan is a modern, family-run inn with more than a dash of personality and style, and a homey feel to boot. True to its reasonable price point, the Japanese-style rooms themselves are nice if fairly basic in terms of furnishings; but there’s a decent selection of coffee and breakfast sets.

However, the real draw is the decor around the ryokan. Items from Toshiko’s extensive art collection are displayed prominently around the 3-storey building, and they change every few months. You might see large pieces of Nebuta festival floats stretched across a section of wall near the bathroom, a stained glass Art Deco lamp, an antique kimono hanging near the staircase, or a glass bowl with an elegant wrought-iron base casually sitting atop the electric dryer.

Additionally, those who like bathing are in luck. The jacuzzi inside the ryokan is gorgeously tiled, and there are 10 sento (public baths) around the neighbourhood for you to soak in!

If having all the sightseeing spots at your doorstep is non-negotiable, Andon Ryokan in Adachi Ward may not be the right fit. But if you’re looking for a ryokan experience in a super local neighbourhood and don’t mind riding the bus or subway to town every day, this might just be the perfect place for you.
