Fancy a taste of Edo-period entertainment? The Kabukiza Theatre in Ginza is one of the best places in town to watch a kabuki play.

Kabuki is one of those traditional Japanese performing arts that’s being kept alive by aging fans and curious travelers. Luckily, there are still a number of theaters in Tokyo where you can watch a kabuki play, and one of the best is the Kabukiza Theatre in Ginza.

Watching a kabuki play these days is much more accessible than it used to be. You can buy a ticket for a single act of most plays - known as “hitomaku-mi” - which lasts between one to two hours, rather than sitting through an entire show. Plus, you can bring in a bento to eat while watching the show.

A single-act ticket might cost you JPY1000 at most, but this is far cheaper than the full-length show which might set you back anywhere from three to ten times that amount. There’s usually an English audio guide available as well, which costs just a few hundred yen.

You’re not allowed to visit the building without a ticket to a kabuki show. But if you’re not keen on watching a show, the theater facade is pretty impressive and worth a photograph.
