Located at the southwest corner of Osaka Castle Park and very close to Tanimachiyonchome Station, on the Tanimachi subway line, the Osaka Museum of History makes a nice add-on to a castle visit. It’s not a must-do unless you’re a history buff.

Interested in Osaka’s local history? There’s no better place than the Osaka Museum of History. Occupying the 7th to 10th floors of the sail-shaped building near Osaka Castle Park, this museum has been educating visitors on Osaka’s history since 2003.

You’ll start at the higher floors and make your way down. Each floor is dedicated to a different period in Osaka’s period, spanning 1,350 years in total. It’s not all dull exhibits: the’ve taken pains to make it fairly interactive and interesting, with life-sized reconstructions, photographs, scale models, and movies. The attention to detail in some of the dioramas is impressive.

It’s not the best organized or best signposted (in English, at least) museum around, but it’s definitely worth a visit for those who want to learn a bit more about Osaka. As a bonus, you can also enjoy great views of the castle if you head to the top floors of this building.
