Pulse Plaza Antiques Grand Fair is THE best single antiques and art market in Japan. If you’re in town when it’s on, don’t miss it!

The Antiques Grand Fair is held several times a year at the Pulse Plaza event hall in Takeda, which is about 10 minutes south of Kyoto Station by subway. This is the best place to buy Japanese antiques, lacquerware, scrolls, ceramics, bric-a-brac and curios. Dealers come from all over Japan, as do knowledgeable buyers. There are some serious treasures to be found here, but don’t expect any bargains. Even if you don’t intend to buy, you’ll certainly find it a fascinating experience. And, while you’re there, you can stop by the Kyocera Gallery (formerly Kyocera Museum of Art), which is right next door.

While the market is on, there is a free shuttle bus service between Takeda Station and Pulse plaza. Here’s how to get there from Kyoto: Take the Karasuma subway line south from downtown or Kyoto Station to Takeda Station. Exit the station via Exit #4 (below):

Take the steps down to street level and walk away from the station. Cross the pedestrian crosswalk and continue a short distance below the raised highway. You might see the shuttle bus already waiting for you.

The boarding position of the shuttle bus is indicated by a sign on street level in Japanese only (see below):

If you don’t want to take the shuttle bus, a taxi will cost around Y1,000 and take about 10 minutes. Either way, you will be dropped in front of Pulse Plaza. There is no cost to enter the market.
