Jakko In Temple

Ohara’s second major attraction is the intimate temple of Jakko-in, which is reached by an impossibly scenic walk through the traditional village of Ohara.

Having burned to the ground in 2000, the main hall of Jakko-in lacks some of the charming patina so common in Japanese temples, but it makes up for this with its intimate scale and pleasant paintings and Buddhist images. However, for us, the real appeal of visiting Jakko-in is walking through the village of Ohara. It’s a great chance to see a working rural village without having to trek all the way to the hinterlands of Japan. The odd craft shop and tea shop make pleasant stops en route, and the smiles of the villagers are heartwarming.
