Entoku In Temple

Yet another overlooked gem in Southern Higashiyama, Entoku-in Temple is a delightful collection of priceless art treasures and a stunning karesansui (dry stone) garden.

A subtemple of Kodai-ji Temple, which sits just up the hill across Nene-no-Michi, Entoku-in Temple rewards the adventurous visitor with a tight warren of narrow corridors and exquisitely decorated reception and meditation halls, some of which look out on one of Kyoto’s finest gardens. For us, the cherry on the cake here are the fusuma-e (screen paintings) by artist Hasegawa Tohaku, which call to mind the colorful exuberance of any of Monet’s work.
