Sumibi Kushiyaki Torito

This is “haute yakitori” — dynamite yakitori (various bits of chicken cooked on skewers) in fashionable surroundings.

Yakitori restaurants are usually smoky joints filled with half-drunk salarymen puffing on Mild Sevens as though they were in some sort of secret competition with the chicken griller to see who could produce the most smoke. Torito is a wonderful exception to this stereotype — it’s a small, stylish, narrow hallway of a restaurant where the chefs turn out some incredible yakitori and a whole variety of related dishes. I just wish it were easier to get into this place — you might have to wait a few minutes.
