Restaurant Kane Yo Kyoto

Kane-yo is one the best places in Kyoto to sample unagi (eel). The place positively oozes “old Kyoto” charm and the unagi is delicious.

Even if you’re not a big fan of eel back home, you owe it to yourself to give the Japanese version a try. Known as unagi in Japanese, it’s a sublime dish. It’s grilled over charcoal and basted with a fantastic semi-sweet sauce, then served over rice. There are no bones and the flesh almost melts in your mouth. Unagi is especially popular in the summer, because Japanese believe that eating unagi makes them better able to endure the crushing heat of a Japanese summer. Real connoisseurs claim that unagi liver confers the most power and it’s possible to order a skewer of unagi livers. While unagi tends to be fairly expensive in Japan, Kane-yo is remarkably reasonable. It’s also got a wonderful atmosphere — a funky patina of age that calls to mind pre-war Japan.
