Kanei

Kanei makes the best soba in Kyoto and soba otaku (freaks) make the pilgrimage here from all over Japan to sample these sublime noodles.

We tend to avoid the word “artisanal” like the plague. To us, it screams overpaid yuppies with more money than sense. Still, the handmade noodles at this humble little soba restaurant in Nishijin truly earn the title of artisanal, with the emphasis on the root of the word: “art.”

Few places make their soba noodles with 100% domestic soba, and fewer still make the noodles entirely by hand, but Kanei does both, and the results are sublime (provided you’ve got a taste for the delicate flavor of high-end soba). There’s not a lot of English-spoken here, but the odd foreign guests visits and if they sense that you appreciate really good soba, you’ll have no problems getting your point across.
