Inoda Coffee Honten

I love this old coffee shop in Kyoto mostly because it’s not a chain. Well, it is a chain, but it’s not one that’s morphed over the whole world. It’s a good chance to see what Japanese coffee shops were like before “tall” became the new word for “small”.

There are several branches of the venerable Inoda Coffee chain around Kyoto, but we like the old school atmosphere at their downtown “honten” (main branch). Sure, it can occasionally be a bit smoky, but if you want a break from the ubiquitous place with the green sign, this is sure to please. You can get a decent breakfast here, some light meals and, of course, some tasty cakes.
