Koishikawa Korakuen is a stunning Japanese garden in the heart of Tokyo. Built during the early Edo period, it’s one of Tokyo’s oldest landscape gardens. There are quite a few walking trails here and you can easily spend an hour or more strolling around the garden grounds. While you might hear a few screams drifting in from the amusement park nearby, it is by and large a very peaceful place to be.
Though Koishikawa Korakuen is worth visiting year round, it’s also considered one of the best places for the fall foliage. Scarlet and crimson maple contrast brilliantly with evergreen pines, and mirrored beautifully in the large, central pond.
It’s also a well-loved place in spring for the cherry blossoms, and you’ll find visitors crowding around a few weeping cherry trees near the entrance taking photos. Koishikawa Korakuen is also very pretty in May when the irises bloom, as well as on rainy days when it’s quieter.
To get here, take the train to either Iidabashi Station or Korakuen Station; the road from Iidabashi Station is quite clearly signposted in English. Koishikawa Korakuen is relatively less-visited compared to places like Ueno Park and Yoyogi Park, but there’s nothing like getting there at opening time before more visitors begin filtering in.
