Ukai Tei

Michelin-starred teppanyaki dining is not for those on a budget. But for those with spare change, eating at Ukai-tei in Omotesando is an incredible and memorable gustatory experience.

Teppanyaki, where food is cooked on an iron griddle, doesn’t seem like the kind of cuisine that earns a restaurant Michelin stars. Yet Ukai-tei in Omotesando is the proud bearer of a Michelin star, and for good reason. The food really is excellent.

Teppanyaki at its finest is not about dramatic displays of cooking prowess or unnecessary eyebrow-singeing flames. Here, ingredient quality is paramount, and it’s all about bringing out the best of these ingredients over an iron griddle. Imagine abalone steamed in the shell, seared wagyu beef, and matsutake mushrooms seasoned with salt and lime.

Ukai-tei is hardly cheap. A small bowl of garlic fried rice, while exquisite, will set you back JPY1580. A small piece of black beef steak, shared between two as part of the meal, might be over JPY30,000 - but it will also be lush and buttery, and some of the best beef you’ll have in a lifetime. If you have the cash to splash at Ukai-tei, you’ll have a very memorable meal here.

While it is theoretically possible to show up without a reservation, the likelihood of being seated at lunch or dinner is quite low without one. Call ahead to avoid disappointment.
