Tsutaya Tokyo Roppongi inside Roppongi Hills is one of those beautiful, upscale spaces that young bookstores hope they become when they grow up. Designed to attract a more cosmopolitan crowd, there are English and Japanese books nestled next to each other on all manner of ‘lifestyle’ topics - art, architecture, food, design, travel, and more.

At most bookstores in Japan, you can stand and read the books for free. But Tsutaya goes one better and lets you read them over a cup of coffee at the in-store Starbucks. It’s a great way to check out some books you’d never otherwise afford or have the space for. The only downside is actually finding a seat that isn’t taken, especially on the weekends.

If you can’t make it to the hallowed Daikanyama bookstore, the Roppongi Hills branch is a very respectable place to spend your time instead. The 7am opening time makes it fabulous for morning folks who might want to squeeze in some reading before work.

It is also open until 4am, so if you go clubbing in Roppongi and quickly realize how much you hate it, a visit to Tsutaya is a nice, bookish way to disentangle yourself from your more extroverted crew of friends.
