Togo Jinja Shrine

Visit the tranquil Tōgō-jinja Shrine for a quick respite from the consumerist chaos of surrounding Harajuku. If you’re lucky, you might spot a grey heron.

One of the great things about Tokyo is how seamlessly shrines and temples are integrated into modern environments, with tranquil religious spaces cozying up right next to gleaming skyscrapers in urban hubs. One such shrine is Tōgō-jinja Shrine in Harajuku.

Built in 1940 and dedicated to the Grand Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō, who defeated the Russian Baltic Fleet in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), you’ll find Tōgō-jinja Shrine where Meiji Avenue and Takeshita-dori Street intersect. It’s a short three-minute walk from Harajuku Station. There’s a koi pond on quiet shrine grounds, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a grey heron casually hanging out in the waters.

Though there used to be an antique market held on the shrine grounds, it was discontinued in 2010. Still, if you’re passing through Harajuku, Tōgō-jinja Shrine is a lovely breather from the consumerist chaos outside.
