Tendon is an uncomplicated dish. It’s a bowl of rice topped with deep-fried, battered prawns, vegetables, and maybe a shrimp fritter or two - unapologetically everyday fare. What better place to eat it than in the heart of downtown Tokyo?

A stone’s throw from Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa is Daikokuya, a tempura restaurant that’s been serving customers since 1887. It’s one of the many shinise (restaurants more than a century old) in the area, and beloved by locals and tourists alike.

Prix-fixe tempura courses are available from JPY3,300 and upwards, but the tendon - tempura on rice bowl - will give you most bang for your buck. Unlike most other tempura restaurants, the tempura is dredged in dipping sauce just before plating. No need for extra seasoning on your part: just dig in and eat.

Daikokuya does tend to see queues stretching around the block for its tempura. Arrive at opening time (11am) or expect to wait up to 45 minutes just to be seated.
