Shinjuku Gyoen Garden is one of Tokyo’s largest, most beloved public parks. For an admission fee of just 200 yen, you’ll have access to one of the best spots in the city for cherry blossom-viewing parties. At 3.5km in circumference and around 58 hectares in size, you could spend an entire day meandering through the gardens built in various styles - French, traditional Japanese, English landscape, and a few forested areas. Plant diversity is high here! Spacious lawns provide plenty of opportunity for simply relaxing amidst all the greenery. There’s even a tropical greenhouse, which houses an impressive collection of ferns and other plants under its roof. It’s very worth a visit.

There is literally no bad time of the year to visit Shinjuku Gyoen Garden. It is beautiful all the time, whether it’s during cherry blossom time or when the autumn leaves turn red and gold. Even the chillier winter months see seasonal flowers blooming there. And, even if you encounter a wet day in Tokyo, don’t let that put you off visiting. Just remember that Makoto Shinkai’s iconic, gorgeously-animated film The Garden of Words was set largely in Shinjuku Gyoen Garden during the rainy season.
