Shanti Harajuku

For good soup curry packed with vegetables and spices, we like SHANTi Harajuku. We also love that it’s a little less crowded than most places in the area, and that you won’t have to queue for hours!

There’s a small chance of having to queue during lunch hours in Harajuku, especially if you end up at some of the more popular restaurants. While you won’t ever completely eliminate lunch queues, you can minimize them by heading to slightly less busy eateries — without compromising on the quality of your meal, of course.

For consistently good soup curry packed with vegetables and spices, we like heading to SHANTi Harajuku. It’s located on the second floor of a building down a side street further into Ura-Harajuku — the ‘back’ side of this area. It’s less crowded than some of the eateries nearer Omotesando, with the bonus of being open at off-peak hours so you can get your soup curry fix even at teatime.

Their original chicken and vegetables soup curry is a great place to start, but there are dozens of variations on the menu. Decide if you want a light and healthy bowl, a fishier seafood soup, a “gattsuri” soup curry with more meat — these use the original soup base. Or, you can go for a Saigon-style soup. You get to add toppings if you want, and specify your rice size too.

Like a good soup curry restaurant, you can specify spice levels at SHANTi Harajuku, which run from around 1 to 40 for the original soup base, and around 1 to 5 for the Saigon base. Basically, the more chillies there are, the spicier it will be. They charge for extra spice from Level 5 onwards in the first category. Start on the lower end if it’s your first visit.

SHANTi Harajuku is a very decent Harajuku lunch option in the soup curry category. Their curry is tasty, chock-full of vegetables, and won’t break the bank. Plus, you won’t have to wait for hours just to have a quick meal. It’s a good place to have on your eating list!
