Pizza Strada serves some fine wood-fired New York-style pizza, cooked in front of your eyes; there’s even a terrace should you wish to dine outside.

The last decade in Tokyo has seen a real pizza renaissance. With the opening of world-class restaurants like Seirinkan and Pizza Studio Tamaki, Tokyo’s pizza offerings wouldn’t be out of place in cities like New York or Rome. But you’re in Tokyo, and when you’re craving a New York slice at reasonable prices, Pizza Strada in Azabu-Juban is a solid choice.
Having been in business since 2011, Pizza Strada is a favourite with locals for their no-nonsense, excellent wood-fired pizzas. Think classic offerings like margherita, marinara, olive, anchovy, and pepperoni. There’s plenty on the appetiser menu to whet your appetite, while the wine list would give any decent Italian or French restaurant in Tokyo a run for its money.
If you can, have a seat at the counter so you can watch the proceedings. It’s fascinating to see how they prepare the pizza and adjust the amount of wood in the oven to bake each pie. Service is friendly and efficient, and some of the staff also speak reasonably fluent English, so ordering won’t be a problem.
The great thing about pizza is that it can also be vegetarian-friendly — a real godsend in Japan, where vegetarianism is far less widely-adopted and most of the food contains fish stock. Have a margherita or marinara and one of your dinners is sorted!
