Cafe De Lambre

Café de L’Ambre in Ginza is a legendary coffeehouse that’s been in operation since 1948. Though the original owner passed away at the age of 104 in March 2018, the coffee continues to be excellent.

With its long history and excellent coffee, Café de L’Ambre counted luminaries such as Kawabata Yasunari and Nagai Kafū among its clientele. And the focus here really is on coffee. Aside from a handful of coffee-flavored sweets (like pudding or jelly), all the menu choices here boil down to the various kinds of beans available.

Even those familiar with coffee might be hard-pressed to make a choice here. Besides the lone blend, there are 30-plus single origin varieties, many of which have been aged for 10 - 20 years. Did you know you could age coffee? That’s what makes this place so special.

Operated by coffee master Sekiguchi Ichiro until his recent passing in March 2018, Café de L’Ambre was - and is - considered one of Tokyo’s legendary coffeehouses. At present, the younger baristas who worked with him continue to run this shop.
