Omotesando Hills

The Tadao Ando-designed Omotesando Hills is home mainly to brand names and luxury goods, but it’s worth visiting just to look at the architecture.

Omotesando Hills, a shopping complex on Omotesando-dori Avenue in Aoyama, is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. There are brand names and upscale boutiques galore within, making it a great place for more moneyed folks to do their clothes shopping. Think Valentino, Yohji Yamamoto, Jimmy Choo, and Jun Hashimoto and you’ll be on the mark.

The other factor drawing visitors is the name behind the complex. Designed by Tadao Ando, the Omotesando Hills complex is genuinely quite enjoyable to look at inside if you enjoy his style of architecture. Though it’s technically around 6 stories high, a single floor winds and spirals upwards along 6 levels on a gentle incline - you can reach the top floor without ever stepping on an escalator or flight of stairs.

If nothing else, if you’re around in July or August, you could visit Omotesando Hills for a brief air-conditioned respite from a hot summer’s day.
