New York Bar

Sip a cocktail and experience your own Lost in Translation moment at the ultra-cosmopolitan, sky-high New York Bar in Shinjuku.

The New York Bar in the Park Hyatt must be the most famous bar in Tokyo - not just for the stunning night view of Shinjuku and beyond, but also for its cameo in the Sofia Coppola classic Lost In Translation. But it’s not all gimmicky movie fame. The cocktails are expensive, but expertly mixed and genuinely good, with some interesting Japanese-inspired drinks using sake and local gin. If you’re keen on committing to the full movie experience, go for the L.I.T (Lost In Translation) cocktail. It’s a sweet concoction of sake, sakura liqueur, cranberry juice, and Peachtree schnapps.

It gets busy in the evening around dinnertime, so do be considerate of other patrons when taking photos of the view. Going early right when it opens around 5:00pm means that you might be able to recreate the scene from the movie, and you’ll also avoid the cover charge applicable from 8:00pm on most nights. There’s a dress code at all times, as evidenced by the incredibly stylish Japanese customers around. But usually, as long as you look reasonably neat and aren’t in sweatpants, they won’t say anything.

For a quieter, more magical experience, try going after 9pm on a slightly rainy weeknight. There are usually fewer tourists around, but you’ll still have a unforgettable and spectacular view of the foggy, glimmering city lights below.
