Ginza Sushiko Honten

Ginza Sushiko Honten has 1 Michelin star and the honor of being one of the oldest sushi places in Tokyo. Naturally, it has the sushi chops to match these accolades.

If you can’t snag a reservation at Sukibayashi Jiro, there are plenty of other amazing sushi restaurants in Ginza to eat at without needing to book half a year in advance. 1-starred Sushiko Honten, one of the oldest sushi places in Tokyo at over 130 years in business, is a decent place to start.

Like the best sushi shops, Sushiko Honten doesn’t announce its presence in Ginza - you could walk past the restaurant and miss it entirely. Once you’re inside, though, it’s like being in a private theatre - albeit one where the actors are all sushi chefs, and you’re allowed to chat to them while they perform.

Sushi here isn’t fast or cheap - lunch starts at around JPY12,000 per person. Expect an omakase lunch to take around two hours. Depending on what’s in season, you’ll taste your way through the fish in the sea: several kinds of shrimp and abalone, various cuts of tuna, sea urchin, whitefish, squid, horse mackerel and more.

There are just 10 seats, so reservations are recommended. That being said, it is generally easier to snag a seat here than at some of the other top-level places in town. Given the more relaxed atmosphere and friendly chefs, it’s a good place for relative sushi newbies with the money to spend. If you’re looking for something that’s better value for money, however, you might be better off eating elsewhere.
