Tonkatsu Daiki

Craving something homey, approachable, and affordable? At Daiki, a tonkatsu specialist in Higashi-Shinsaibashi, you’ll find gorgeous deep-fried pork cutlets at affordable prices. Lunches are great if you’re on a tight budget, but dinner won’t exactly break the bank either.

Located just a minute or two on foot from Nagahoribashi Station, Daiki is a warm, homey little tonkatsu specialist serving up tasty, affordable cutlets. Each one is fried to order, and is appropriately crispy on the outside, fatty and juicy on the inside (if you’ve ordered the loin) or beautifully tender (if you’ve ordered the fillet). You even get a choice of interesting sauces to go alongside besides the usual tonkatsu sauce. Try the oroshi ponzu (grated daikon and citrus-spiked soy), plum-flavoured daikon sauce, or miso katsu sauce.

If you’re hankering for something beyond the usual deep-fried cutlets, Daiki has a number of interesting variations. Try the rosu katsu toji, which is simmered briefly with a saucy omelette on top. Or have it topped with a shower of chopped scallions, as in the negikatsu nabe. You could even have it with cheese, if you’re craving something extra rich on top of the deep-fried food! If you’re around during the wintertime, they do great kaki-furai, which are deep-fried, breaded Hiroshima oysters.

Lunches are invariably cheaper - the most expensive regular set lunch of pork loin goes for just JPY1080. But even dinners aren’t too costly: around 300g of pork loin (which is a lot) will set you back no more than JPY3000.
