Shichifukujin

Shichifukujin in Tenma is a counter seat-only kushikatsu restaurant that’s super popular with the locals. Their deep-fried skewers are fabulous, the beer is cheap, and they serve oden (simmered things) to balance out all that fried food. A great choice if you’re in the area!

Wander 5 minutes from Tenma Station and you’ll find Shichifukujin, a kushikatsu restaurant well-loved by the locals. It’s a popular spot and usually full from the moment it opens at lunch, not least because the first glass of beer goes for just JPY100. Luckily, turnover is fast at places like this so you shouldn’t have to wait too long. We love their chicken katsu skewer - it’s a crowd-pleaser.

Japan isn’t always the easiest place to eat in if you’re vegetarian, but kushikatsu is a pretty safe bet, especially if you don’t mind that everything is fried in the same oil. At Shichifukujin, vegetarians are well catered for. There are choices like the usual green peppers (shishito), maitake mushrooms, and asparagus; but also more outre options like young corn, broccoli, gingko nuts, apple, and peaches. You can even have a deep-fried egg for your protein needs!

If you can’t decide where to begin, try ordering the 6-skewer set. This is like playing Russian roulette, but with kushikatsu - it’s a surprise as to what you get, so eat with an open mind!

To balance out all that deep-fried goodness, try ordering some oden. These are ingredients like daikon radish, konnyaku jelly, and fishcakes simmered in a sweet-savoury broth.
