With its comfortable and relatively spacious rooms, tasty breakfast, and free hotel shuttle service, among others, RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka near Nakanoshima Station gives you bang for your buck in the mid-range budget category.

The RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka isn’t the newest hotel around, but it is a well-appointed one for the price range, with friendly, polite staff, and very clean, comfortable, if simple rooms. The breakfast buffet has a decent selection of food, though it can get a little busy at peak hours.

The overall look of the RIHGA Royal is a little old-fashioned — more critical folks might call it tacky, since it does have a distinctly 80s feel — but the rooms are comfortable. Rooms here are more spacious than most Japanese hotels, though you may want to pay a little more for extra comfort. Some of the rooms have been refurbished, so it’s luck of the draw as to whether you get one of the newer rooms in the west wing! Make sure you specify non-smoking rooms at the time of booking if that’s what you need.

Location-wise, it’s not entirely perfect. RIHGA Royal is centrally-located but not right on the doorstep of Namba or Dotonbori. However, the complimentary shuttle service to and from Osaka Station will get you to the main Umeda shopping area for all your retail therapy needs. Its proximity to Nakanoshima Station on the Keihan line also means that it’s a a good place if you want to make day trips out to neighbouring Kyoto, which is just one hour away by train!

This hotel has an onsite fitness centre and a 25-metre indoor pool, which is a rarity in Japan. However, just know that it’s par for the course to charge hotel guests a day rate if you want to use these facilities. Alternatively, should you suddenly get an itch to belt out a song or ten at karaoke, you can do just that at the connected shopping mall.

RIHGA Royal has far more on-site dining options than most, with 20 restaurants ranging from French to traditional Japanese. That being said, they’re not the cheapest restaurants around. The food is generally good but you’re likely to shell out a minimum of JPY4000 per person for dinner. Unless you’re on a business trip, we suggest checking out all the other dining options in the city.
