Ramen shops might be a dime a dozen in Osaka, but the best kind you’ll find is a hole-in-the-wall joint like Ramen Kasumi Awaza. It’s perfect for a quick lunch, followed by a stroll in nearby Utsubo-koen Park to walk off the calories. Peak hours might see a queue of hungry locals, but as with most ramen shops, turnover will be pretty quick.

At Kasumi, you should try the niboshi ramen, which is a simple but deeply-flavored sardine broth infused with a dose of pork fat. (This is assuming, of course, that you like sardines!) Though this surf-and-turf soup is relatively thin - pork fat doesn’t seem to have made it overly greasy - it’s paired with thick noodles that slurp beautifully. The mazesoba, on the other hand, is essentially a super flavorful ramen-spaghetti mashup. Don’t forget to get it with the ramen egg.
If noodles alone aren’t enough for you, try adding an egg and extra chashu, or order the chashu rice bowl alongside. It might sound strange to pair two carbohydrates - rice and noodles - with each other, but trust us when we say that it makes for a very satisfying meal.
