Kidatake

Kidatake is a rough and ready udon specialist in Namba serving one of the best bowls of udon noodles in the city. It’s perfect for a casual lunch while exploring the area. Recommended!

Combining two styles of udon noodles? That’s what Kidatake apparently did when it opened - fusing the soft but resilient texture of Osaka-style udon with the chewiness of Sanuki-style udon from Kagawa prefecture. Debates as to whether this is sacrilegious or not is best left to local gourmands who know better; all you need to know is that their style of udon is pretty damn delicious.

Their most popular dish is the chikuwa-tama-ten-bukkake udon. It’s quite a mouthful, but think of udon noodles with a dashi-based sauce poured over, along with fish cake and egg tempura. The egg tempura is unusual - not many places deep-fry their eggs - but it has that beautiful balance of crispy batter and gooey yolk, the latter which then coats the noodles. Lemon juice and grated ginger gives this dish a zingy dimension that really lifts this dish out of too-heavy territory.

There are plenty of other intriguing choices on the menu - or rather, the vending machine buttons - so your only issue here will be figuring out what to eat. Go with a friend so you can trade bites of each others bowls. It does close when it sells out of noodles - they’re only open from 11:00am to 4:00pm - so go early if you can.
