Honke Shibato

Unagi set meals at Koraibashi’s 300 year-old Honke Shibato don’t come cheap, but it’s a meal that’s worth splashing out on.

Honke Shibato has been in operation for over 300 years, which just means they’ve had all that time to perfect the art of grilling fantastic eel. Currently run by the 15th generation of the same family, it still attracts a loyal crowd of locals as well as discerning tourists who love their grilled unagi bowls. They’re pretty secretive about exactly what goes into the secret sauce, but that’s only to be expected!

The eel is cooked Kansai-style, which means that it’s sliced on the belly and grilled without a prior steaming, rendering it beautifully crispy. One of their signature dishes, the Osaka Mamushi, has this grilled eel layered into the rice as well as having generous slices of it laid atop. Another dish to consider ordering is the ohitsumabushi, or grilled eel served with rice, dashi stock, and various seasonings like seaweed strips and wasabi.

A meal here will set you back from around JPY3000 to JPY6000, depending on the dish you choose. It’s not the cheapest meal around, but an excellent unagi dish is one of those meals worth occasionally splurging on.
