What The Dickens

On days when you’re missing the UK, Brit-run pub What the Dickens! in Ebisu ticks all the right boxes. Go for classic British pub grub washed down with a pint of ale.

Though Tokyo has no shortage of underground bars and drinking joints, there’s nothing quite like a pub, especially if you’re a Brit in the big city and yearning for a taste of home.

This is when you head to the charmingly-named What the Dickens! in Ebisu. Run by British expats in Tokyo, the interior is appropriately warm and rustic, and there’s a wide selection of draft beers, stouts, ales, and other tipples to keep you well-watered.

But that’s not all. You’ll find all the pub grub classics at What the Dickens!: bangers and mash, fish and chips, meat pies, cottage pies, baked beans. Everything is freshly cooked, with decidedly British-sized portions.

Nightly live entertainment keeps the atmosphere fresh and energetic, and the main draw for many Tokyo expats is the monthly Pirates of Tokyo Bay Comedy Show.

What the Dickens! won’t transport you back to the UK, but it is about as close to a British home as you’ll get in Tokyo.
