Tsukiji Sushisei Honten

For quality sushi at reasonable prices in Tsukiji, you can’t go wrong with Tsukiji Sushisei Honten. As a bonus, this two-storey restaurant doesn’t see the mind-boggling queues of rival shops!

Located in the Outer Market of what used to be the world’s largest fish market, Tsukiji Sushisei Honten has been serving up sushi to the hungry masses since 1889. It’s still a popular place to go, which is testament to the quality of their sushi. It’s a great alternative to standing in line at Sushi Dai or Sushi Daiwa for several hours. If you can, grab a seat at the counter — it’s always fun watching the magic happen right in front of you.

Prices for sushi range from around JPY216 to JPY648, which is fairly reasonable considering the quality of the fish and size of each piece. A good deal is to get the omakase of 12 pieces, which will clock in at around JPY3,800 per person.

In recent years, Tsukiji Sushisei Honten has seen plenty of success, and branched out to over twenty outlets across Japan. A convenient branch to visit is their Tokyo Station restaurant, which opens at 7:00am and is immensely popular with salarymen looking for a quick breakfast. The dish to try is their ochazuke — tea rice with savoury tea broth — which makes a lovely hot breakfast. We particularly like the sea bream with sesame dressing.
