The Sumida Hokusai Museum
- Tokyo
- 15 Jun, 2025
The Sumida Hokusai Museum is a small museum dedicated to the master of Japanese wood block prints (think of “The Wave”). It’s interesting, but probably best for serious fans only.

The Sumida Hokusai Museum is located in Ryogoku, not far from the excellent Edo-Tokyo Museum. The museum is located inside a dramatic modern structure that looks a bit like a giant, reflective letter M. We’re not sure how this modern design relates in any way to the content of the museum, but at least it’s interesting.

The collection and displays are quite small, with the permanent collection contained in just one dark room. Then, in an adjoining room, they hold temporary displays from the museum’s collection. Perhaps the most interesting display is the life-size diorama of Hukusai’s house, which gives you a good idea of living conditions at the time.

Given the small size of the collection and the trouble it takes to get there, we can only recommend this museum to serious fans of Hokusai. You can see wood-block printing on display in other museums, like the Tokyo National Museum, which also contain other interesting collections.
