Cosmopolitan port city Yokohama has a great selection of restaurants in all budget ranges, across all genres. Whether it’s Sichuanese fare in Chinatown, conveyor belt sushi restaurants, or exquisite Michelin-starred kaiseki dinners, there’s something for everyone in Yokohama. This is our choice of the best places to eat, broken down by different areas of the city.

Chinatown Area

• Manchinro Honten
  Manchinro Honten is a memorable, old-guard Cantonese restaurant in Yokohama’s Chinatown with a reasonably-priced lunch of dim sum and dumplings.
• Kyokarou Honkan
  Kyokarou Honkan is a Sichuanese restaurant, well-loved by locals for their knife-cut noodles, and you’re unlikely to have any trouble getting a seat here.
• Saiko Shinkan
  Saiko Shinkan is a Cantonese restaurant where you can dine in a different style on each of its five floors. The expense is worth it for the experience.
• Aichyun
  Aichyun is a favourite with local Chinese residents for the soulful, homestyle dishes. Best visited in a group of 3 or more, to share dishes family-style.
• Santon
  Santon is a small family-run restaurant tucked away in Chinatown. The food here is flavourful and better than most of the touristy fare in the area.

Kannai Area

• Maruwa
  You’ll have to queue for Maruwa’s perfectly juicy tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlets) and delicious miso soup — but it’s a must-try if you’re in the area.
• Sugai
  Head for Sugai if you’re after an affordable Michelin 2-star dining experience. It’s a kaiseki with gorgeous dishes showcasing fine seasonal ingredients.
• Bar de Nankyoku Ryourinin Mirai
  Referred to as ‘Mirai’, this quirky bar is run by a well-travelled chef who takes inspiration from his wandering. A fun place for a good night out.
• Asian Bar RAMAI
  If we’re in the Kannai area, we like Asian Bar RAMAI, specialising in soup curry — one of the most comforting and delciously healthy meals around.
• Masago Saryou
  Tucked down a quiet alley, Masago Saryou is a gorgeous 2-star kaiseki restaurant serving some truly fabulous kaiseki banquets. Reservations are a must.
• Katsuretsu-an
  Katsuretsu has been beloved by Yokohama locals since 1927, as their tonkatsu is consistently delicious and the restaurant itself is charmingly retro.

Minato Mirai Area

• Men-ya Iraka
  Men-ya Iraka specialises in tsukemen, or ramen noodles with a dipping broth on the side. One slurp and you’ll be hooked. It’s budget-friendly too.
• Gelato Firenze
  There’s always a queue at Firenze in summer, but true gelato lovers know their scoops are good all year-round. If you’re feeling brave, try the gelato soda.
• Chin Kenichi Mabodōfu Restaurant
  Chin Kenichi Mabodōfu serves a sloppy, spicy beef-and-tofu dish redolent with Sichuan pepper, one of the best renditions outside the Sichuan province.
• Garlic Jo’s
  As the name suggests, Garlic Jo’s is all about garlicky food. And they mean it too — a real boon in a country that’s otherwise rather averse to the stuff!
• TUNE Balcony, Dining & Bar
  TUNE Balcony, Dining & Bar serves contemporary Western-style food. Think pizzas, pastas, salads, and a strangely-named but delicious ‘oven sausage’.

Yokohama Station Area

• Mawashizushi Katsu
  Mawashizushi Katsu in the Yokohama Sky Building serves tasty, affordable conveyor-belt sushi — fun for adults and kids alike, with vegetarian options too.
• Yokohama Nakaya Oozeki Honten
  Yokohama Nakaya Oozeki Honten make deliciously chewy udon (wheat noodles) in-house. It’s all about depth of flavour here and lunch won’t break the bank.
• Sushidokoro Ginza Fukusuke
  Those who prefer their sushi still warm from the kitchen will appreciate Sushidokoro Ginza Fukusuke. You’ll get very a decent meal for the price you pay.
• Nodaiwa
  Craving grilled unagi (freshwater eel)? This branch of the famous Nodaiwa has been going strong for generations. It’s not the cheapest meal, but worth it.
• Ningyocho Imahan
  Sukiyaki is Japanese beef cooked with vegetables in a sweet-salty soy sauce, served with raw egg for dipping, and few serve it better than Ningyocho Imahan.
• Ore no French Yokohama
  Ore no French strives for quality food at reasonable prices, with all the classics from French onion soup and pâté to crème brûlée and steak frites.

Yamate Area

• Elysee Hikaru
  Elysee Hikaru is a contemporary French restaurant with a dose of 1980s nouvelle cuisine. It’s not cheap and cheerful but is perfect for a romantic date.
• Elena
  Elena is a charming little cafe tucked away in a quiet part of the Yamate district, with lots of natural lighting and wooden floors. The food is good too.
• Yamate ROCHE
  Yamate ROCHE serves up hearty Japanese-style Western food. It’s generally hard to go wrong no matter what you order. and there’s an English-language menu.
• Cafe Anarchy Mama
  Cafe Anarchy Mama is a small 10-seater cafe in the Iwasaki Museum. The soup lunch makes a decent meal and it’s just right if you want a quick coffee break.

Motomachi Area

• Shio Ramen Honmarutei Yokohama
  Shio Ramen Honmarutei Yokohama is a 12-seat, counter-only restaurant. Their salt ramen is beautifully balanced. Little wonder there’s always a queue.
• SAKURA Japanese Tea Specialty Shop
  SAKURA, a specialty shop, is a Japanese tea lover’s dream. You can sip over 20 varieties sourced from all over the country. It’s also a dessert paradise.
• Cafe de lento
  Cafe de lento is a cozy cafe in the Motomachi district. A lovely place to relax, you’ll wish you could eat their lunches every day. A little pricey, though.
