Yokohama Ryokan

As a fairly cosmopolitan small port city, Yokohama has very few traditional ryokan (Japanese-style inns). However, we can recommend one if you’re keen on a ryokan experience. It’s a good choice for those who want a break from hotels, or for those traveling with children who need a room that can accommodate everyone.

Ryokan Matsushima
Ryokan Matsushima is one of the few Japanese-style inns in the city. It’s a charming, family-run accommodation located 15 minutes by foot from Maita Station. We like the personal touches — you’ll see your name at the entrance when you arrive for check-in — and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Rooms are reasonably spacious, and we like the little koi pond and garden as well as the free WiFi. Consider including breakfast, as it’s delicious and you’ll be hard-pressed to find traditional Japanese breakfasts at many places in the city. On the other hand, perhaps skip dinner — while you could have dinner here, Yokohama has a multitude of other dining options. Ryokan Matsushima is an especially good choice for a Japanese-style inn experience if you’re travelling to Yokohama for business and don’t have time to venture outside of the city. They’re also kid-friendly; just let them know in advance.
