Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum
- Tokyo
- 15 Jun, 2025
With its striking red-brick facade, the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum is an iconic landmark in the Marunouchi area. Even if you don’t attend an exhibition, you can still relax in the garden out front.

The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum was originally conceived and built as Marunouchi’s first Western-style office building in 1894. However, it was torn down in 1968 and eventually rebuilt as a near-exact replica of the original building, reopening to the public in 2010 as a modern art museum.

The museum holds exhibitions three times a year featuring - fittingly enough - Western art from the 19th century, a period contemporary with the original building.

One of the main highlights of artworks owned by the museum is the Maurice Joyant collection, comprising over 200 works by painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.

If you aren’t keen on an exhibition, the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum Garden is a very pleasant place to relax for over lunch or tea. While there’s outdoor seating, you’re unfortunately not allowed to sit on the grass, which seems to miss the whole point of the small lawn.
