Mikimoto

Cultured pearl purveyor Mikimoto in Ginza has several outlets in the area. The most visited and photographed one is Mikimoto Ginza 2 - its striking facade brings to mind shimmering pink pearls.

Mikimoto is Japan’s most famous purveyor of pearls. In 1883, the founder developed a way to cultivate ‘cultured’ pearls, which led eventually to the family’s current pearl empire. Today, they continue to sell gorgeous jewelry featuring cultured pearls. Naturally.

While the flagship Mikimoto store is located on Chuo-dori Street next to Wako Department Store, it’s Mikimoto Boutique Ginza - also known as Mikimoto Ginza 2 - that receives far more attention. This tall, pink building with irregularly shaped windows is an eye-catching piece of architecture that’s rather delightful to look at.

While the flagship store caters mostly to more upmarket clientele, Mikimoto Ginza 2 stocks more casual jewelry, making it more affordable for younger shoppers. Besides jewelry, there’s a bridal salon, restaurants, and even a popular sweets shop in the building.
