Laforet

If you shop for clothes at just one place in Harajuku, make it Laforet - a 13-floor building full of independent boutiques geared at fashionistas. Even better - visit during the summer sale.

Located right opposite Tokyo Plaza with its famous mirrored entrance, Laforet is a shopping haven for Japanese teens and tourists alike.

With 13 floors and around 127 shops, there’s a boutique for every subculture here. Most are targeted at fashion-forward youth, with styles ranging from adorable to punk to goth to downright eccentric. There are floor guides available, which are handy if you’re looking for a particular shop.

Should you plan your visit to Tokyo in summer, you may like to time your trip to Laforet Grand Bazaar. This is Laforet’s summer bargain sale, which usually runs over 5 days in July. Bargain is an understatement in this case: discounts can go up to 90%, and Laforet’s “time sales” mean that you can occasionally pick up items for pennies. If you do brave the bazaar, steel yourself for the crowds of shoppers.

If nothing else, the best reason to visit Laforet is to geek out at the official Sailor Moon store in the basement and its blindingly cute pink merchandise. You can even pick up Sailor Moon-themed wedding registration forms, albeit Japanese-only ones.
