Karashibi Miso Ramen Kikanbo

Kikanbo translates as ‘ogre’s iron club,’ and if you order the super spicy ramen at this shop in Kanda, you’ll feel like someone’s clubbed you in the mouth. It’s a must-visit for lovers of spicy ramen.

Japanese cuisine, by and large, isn’t spicy at all. That general lack of spice accounts for most Japanese people’s inability to handle any form of spicy food, whether it’s Indian curry or Southeast Asian spicy noodle soups. Nevertheless, there are places that take things to the other extreme, serving food that makes you sweat and cry with every mouthful. One such place is Karashibi Miso Ramen Kikanbo - Kikanbo for short.

Kikanbo, which translates as ‘ogre’s iron club,’ is a ramen shop in Kanda specializing in delicious spicy miso ramen. Luckily for us, you can choose your preferred level of spice, rather than being subjected to the spiciest gustatory hell possible. Specify spice levels on a scale of one to five for ‘kara’ (chili heat) and ‘shibi’ (numbing heat of sansho pepper). If you’re new to this, go for regular heat for both of these.

With the abundance of demon masks on display and taiko music in the background, the atmosphere at Kikanbo is best described as ‘festive demonic kitsch.’ It’s popular with travellers, so there are English labels on the vending machine to help you purchase tickets. But, you can also order from the English menu inside.
