Brown Rice Canteen

Yes, you can have traditional Japanese food that doesn’t contain fish stock! Brown Rice Canteen in Omotesando serves up set lunches showcasing great Japanese vegetables and fermented foods — everything is healthy, organic, and vegan.

Brits in Tokyo might be familiar with skincare company Neal’s Yard Remedies — their main Covent Garden shop remains a great place to pick up organic cosmetics and skincare products to this day. But we bet you didn’t know that they operate a vegan restaurant right in the heart of Tokyo!

Open since 2003, Brown Rice Canteen is one of the rare places in Tokyo where you can get a taste of traditional Japanese whole foods that are also healthy, organic, and vegan to boot. Think fermented foods like miso and pickles, served alongside tofu, brown rice, seaweed, and vegetables. We like the seasonal vegetable curry — a surefire crowd pleaser — but also their seasonal set menu, which changes weekly.

A special mention must go to the crockery used at Brown Rice Canteen, which are all made by local artisans and potters. Apparently, the staff at this restaurant also take care to use condiments from small artisanal suppliers, and avoid additives, preservatives, and mass-produced condiments. No supermarket soy sauce for these folks!

Lunches here are just a smidge more expensive than average meals in Tokyo. The set lunches will set you back around JPY1500 to JPY1700 on weekdays, and there’s an extra JPY500 levied on weekends. But the food here is also entirely organic, and gorgeously plated to boot — worth trying at least once. You’ll probably feel physically better for having eaten here, too.
